The Hotel Calzaiuoli, in the very heart of Florence, between Piazza della Signoria and Piazza del Duomo, is located in an anctque building, originally a 14th-century medieval residence.
In the years when Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy (from 1865 to 1871), many things changed in the historical centre to adapt it to the new political and social role of the city. It was thoroughly renovated, through the complete demolition of the old market and of the Jewish area, near Piazza della Repubblica, which was then extended to its present dimensions.
Among the urban interventions of those years, designed and carried out by Architect Giuseppe Poggi, Via Calzaiuoli was broadened and redesigned to make it straight, modifying the architecture of the buildings along the street. For this reason, Hotel Calzaiuoli, even if it has been fully renovated in 1982, still features a typical 19th-century façade, and hides the remains of a medieval tower in its internal architecture
